Danae Io

A car passes through the Greek town of Thebes, while a radio program on the 19th-century British explorer and draughtsman James H. Skene plays over the car stereo. Skene’s depictions of the Greek landscape are routinely used by national institutions to imagine the nation’s post-Ottoman years. In the film,  Skene’s imperial imaginings collide with contemporary landscapes, questioning the way national histories are constructed, transmitted and erased.
