Jamil McGinnis

Jamil is a filmmaker and artist whose work explores collective memory, diaspora, and the ephemerality of home to bridge the language in-between scripted and non-scripted work. His work has screened globally including the Museum of Modern Art, Film at Lincoln Center, Walker Arts Center, Locarno Film Fest, Cannes’ Directors Fortnight, BFI, Telluride, New York Film Festival and Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival—where Gramercy, a film he co-wrote and co-directed, won the 2021 Labo Competition’s Grand Prix. Jamil’s latest short, as time passes, world premiered at 2022 Cannes’ Directors Fortnight followed by the New York Film Festival and 2023 Clermont-Ferrand—where it received an honorable jury mention. Under the moniker of Seneca Village Pictures, Jamil and filmmaking partner, Pat Heywood, are currently developing their first feature titled, In Search of Time, shooting in August 2023. The project is a Rooftop Films Filmmakers Grant recipient, Hampton Screenwriting Lab participant and Gotham Week’s 2022 Project Market selection. Jamil co-founded a book publishing studio with Max Friedman called THINGS YOU KNOW, creating their first monograph in 2020 and curating a group exhibition in partnership with the Weeksville Heritage Center and the Launch School in Brooklyn. Jamil was raised in Germany and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.
